Wintersaison 22/23: Paznaun – Ischgl zieht erfolgreiche Bilanz

Updated 21.05.2023

This year's winter season in the Tyrolean Paznaun ended on 30 April with the Top of the Mountain Closing Concert by Eros Ramazzotti. The evaluations of the tourist winter show a very pleasing seasonal development. Between November 22 and April 23, more than 2.2 million overnight stays were recorded in the Paznaun villages - in the cross-border skiing area of Ischgl/Samnaun an average of 12,000 guests per day were counted and a total of more than 500,000 ski passes were sold.

The beginning of the winter season 22/23 was marked by the energy crisis and massive inflation. In the end, however, all this was not reflected in the booking behaviour. "We were able to record an increase in overnight stays in Paznaun of about 28.8 per cent compared to the previous season 21/22 - compared to the pre-crisis level in the 18/19 season, the gap is only about 4.7 per cent. Especially in Ischgl, for example, we didn't notice any 'January hole' this year - with over 290,000 overnight stays, we were in second place in Tyrol," Alexander von der Thannen, chairman of the Paznaun - Ischgl Tourist Association, sums up.

"We did not expect such a successful overall result in view of the starting conditions in November. Our expectations were exceeded. Our guests continue to enjoy our comprehensive winter sports offer and established event series such as 'Spring-Blanc' were well received," says Thomas Köhle, Managing Director of the Paznaun - Ischgl Tourist Association.

The winter season was equally pleasing for the Silvretta Arena Ischgl/Samnaun. "Right from the start this year we have repeatedly recorded extremely strong ski days with over 20,000 winter sports enthusiasts in the Silvretta Arena. In addition, with over 500,000 ski passes sold in this winter season, we have come close to the pre-crisis level," sums up Günther Zangerl, CEO of Silvrettaseilbahn AG. His colleague on the board, Markus Walser, adds: "In terms of first-time admissions and average daily admissions, too, we are almost back to pre-crisis levels, with 1.9 million or a daily average of more than 12,000 guests."

In terms of turnover, the company, which employs almost 700 people at peak times, can point to a new record of 90 million euros.

"The Silvretta Therme, which only opened on 8 December 22, also counted a remarkable 75,000 visitors in its first winter season. We are pleased that this important investment in the year-round tourist offer was so well received by guests from all over the world as well as by the local population," said the two Silvrettaseilbahn AG board members. In addition, the investment has created around 100 new jobs for the region. In the next few weeks - taking into account the first few months of operating experience - minor structural adaptations will be made so that the spa can start the summer season in the best possible condition.

After the winter is before the summer. With this in mind, preparations for the upcoming summer season are already in full swing. Event highlights that have been very popular and attracted large numbers of participants in recent years will be continued and developed further this summer. For example, the Culinary Way of St. James, the Ischgl Ironbike, the E-bike World Championships for Everyone and the Silvrettarun 3000. And in autumn, guests can once again look forward to a colourful programme with various sporting events and regional events as part of the Golden Summits event series. Further innovations in the tourist offer will be communicated shortly.

Silvrettaseilbahn AG is also pleased to be one of the "Best Austrian Summer Mountain Railways" from the start of summer 2023. The seal of quality awarded is a promise of quality to guests and the region and guarantees carefree nature experiences on the mountain. This year, for the first time, the operating hours of the Ischgl/Samnaun cable cars will also be extended until 15 October. All these efforts are aimed at further establishing Paznaun as a year-round destination.
