Klimafreundlich zum Ausflugsziel: NaturTrip übernimmt die Öffi-Planung

Updated on 08.05.2023

The NaturTrip web application links public transport timetable data with activities and excursion destinations and provides suitable suggestions based on this. Tirol Werbung has been providing this service throughout Tyrol since the beginning of May.

Innsbruck, 8 May 2023 - If you want to do something in your free time or on holiday, you tend to use your car for the sake of convenience. With NaturTrip, there is a solution for planning excursions by public transport quickly and easily. After the Wilder Kaiser region had positive experiences with the web application as a pilot region, the Tirol Tourist Board extended this service to the whole of Tyrol at the beginning of May and made it available at naturtrip.tirol.at. Tourism associations (TVB) can join in, as the TVB Seefeld has already done. Other TVBs are working on implementation.

Customised suggestions

NaturTrip follows a simple principle: the online service links timetable data with activities and opening times and suggests suitable tours or excursion destinations that can be reached quickly and easily from the selected starting point by public transport. This means that users no longer have to waste time collating information from different websites. NaturTrip takes care of this and is aimed at locals, guests and hosts with this service.

NaturTrip not only provides information, but also inspiration: users only need to enter their location, their interests (e.g. hiking or swimming) and the maximum acceptable journey time to receive appropriate suggestions. And to ensure that everyone gets home on time, the application also shows the last possible return journey.

Save time, nerves and CO2

NaturTrip users not only save themselves the trouble of searching for a parking space and paying a parking fee, but also make a valuable contribution to environmental protection. In addition to the route, the application also shows how long the same journey would have taken by car and how much CO2 has been saved. "Tirol Werbung has been committed to strengthening public mobility for many years - both when travelling to the destination and when on site. NaturTrip combines the quality of Tyrol's holidays and leisure activities with public transport services and encourages people to leave their cars at home. In this way, we are helping to relieve our roads. Less traffic means less dirt, less noise and less congestion," says Karin Seiler, Managing Director of Tirol Werbung, delighted with the new service.

Behind the service is the start-up company NaturTrip GmbH from Berlin, which launched a pilot in Berlin and Brandenburg in 2015. "More and more people want to live and travel more sustainably. We are using digital means to roll out the red carpet on buses and trains. The less complicated public transport becomes, the more people will switch from cars," says Hermann Weiß, co-founder of NaturTrip. "Regions that integrate our application can also tap into new target groups, for example young, urban people who don't drive much. Or senior citizens who are reluctant to get behind the wheel themselves," adds NaturTrip Managing Director Andreas Boos.

Sustainable offer for regions

The Wilder Kaiser region recognised this early on: NaturTrip has been part of www.wilderkaiser.info since 2020 and is available to all leisure users as a planning tool. "Mobility is a key issue for the quality of life of locals, employees and guests in our region. NaturTrip supports our aim of reducing private transport. In addition to sufficient alternatives to the private car, we also need tools such as NaturTrip that make travelling easy and convenient. That's why usability was the focus of this project right from the start," emphasises Lukas Krösslhuber, Managing Director of TVB Wilder Kaiser.

With the expansion of NaturTrip to the whole of Tyrol, Tirol Werbung is now also giving tourism associations the opportunity to join in. TVB Seefeld is already making use of this: "We are currently launching a large-scale mobility campaign," reports Elias Walser, Managing Director of TVB Seefeld. "From summer, our region will be perfectly connected by bus and train. An important part of this is NaturTrip. This means we can provide our guests and the local population with an excellent tool to easily plan their excursions in the region by public transport." Walser sees the mobility campaign as an important step towards sustainable regional development: "We want to give our guests an incentive to leave their own car at home, travel to our region by bus and train and then explore it by public transport. Combined with a longer length of stay, we can demonstrate the potential for CO2 savings and continue to develop in a core area of our sustainability strategy: mobility."
