As in the previous year, it rained countless gold, silver and bronze medals at the e-bike world championships for everyone in Ischgl. At the highlight of this year's e-bike season, 1,317 participants registered and cycled for every second. Jaro Mician from Slovakia won the elite class in the men's category, Barbara Oberdorfer from Italy was successful in the women's category. 701 Everyman World Champions were able to cheer at the end. Save the Date: The E-Bike World Championships 2024 will take place from 5 - 7 September.
Pure sunshine, a great atmosphere and incredible commitment from the 1,317 registered participants at this year's E-bike World Championships for Everyman: as in previous years, the towns of Ischgl and Galtür brought everything they had to be ready for a record crowd in two categories, Elite and Everyman.
While in the Everyman class, three times had to be undercut in order to secure a medal at the end, the motto for the participants in the Elite class was: The first to reach the finish line is the world champion. This year, Jaro Mician from Slovakia mastered the extremely demanding 36 kilometres with an altitude difference of 1200 metres the fastest. This course was characterised by narrow, technically demanding uphill and downhill sections as well as various obstacles. Jaro Mician won with a time of 1:20:06.1 ahead of Roland Ranftl from Austria and Adrian Horchler from Germany and can now call himself E-Bike World Champion. The victory in the women's category went to Barbara Oberdorfer from Italy. She won with a time of 1:27:12.3 ahead of Tina Schirmaier from Germany and Renate Peer from Ischgl. The main prize in the raffle this year was an e-bike from Simplon worth 8000 euros. At the e-bike fox hunt on Thursday, a total of 15 ladies competed against the ÖSV "fox" Teresa Stadlober and 62 men against the ÖSV "fox" Mika Vermeulen.
A veritable flood of world champions was also to be crowned this year in the Everyman category. A total of 1,055 e-bikers registered for the Everyman course, and in the end 92 of them could be happy about a gold medal. Another 258 conquered silver on the 26-kilometre course, 351 were rewarded with bronze.
Altogether, the participants came from more than 25 nations. Besides Austria and Germany, participants from Lithuania, Eritrea and the United States were also at the start. The diversity was also reflected in the age of the participants. While the youngest runner was only 10 years old, the oldest participant was 82 years old.
The icing on the cake was the Guinness World Record with the distinction of being the largest e-bike race in the world. The organisers are also very happy about the successful event: "To inspire so many active participants of every generation, from ten to over 80 years of age, from near and far, amateur and professional athletes for the trend sport e-bike, to share fun and joy together and to celebrate this with a Guinness World Record, is outstanding," says DDr. Markus Mitterdorfer, from the presidium of the E-Bike World Federation (EBWF), who is extremely satisfied. And the responsible Paznaun-Ischgl Tourist Board is also thrilled with the renewed staging in Ischgl: "The 2023 E-Bike World Championships offered both the participants and the spectators along the route an exciting racing spectacle amidst the Paznaun mountain scenery. The record number of participants at the third edition also confirms that this trend sport is a perfect match for the range of activities on offer in our region," says a delighted Alexander von der Thannen, chairman of TVB Paznaun - Ischgl.
There was also plenty on offer in Ischgl this weekend away from the race. An extensive e-bike EXPO, live music by FOLKSHILFE and Jacob Koopman, among others, and many other items on the supporting programme ensured a good mood and plenty of variety, such as the sun.downer after the e-bike fox hunt on the Idalp at over 2,300 metres above sea level with chilling beats and a breathtaking panorama.
While the participants will remember the latest edition for a long time, the EBWF is already looking ahead and is probably already aiming for a new record number of participants. Among the first 333 registrations for the E-bike World Championships for Everyone 2024 from 5 - 7 September, an e-bike from Storck worth 7500 euros will be raffled off.
