A big piece of family happiness at Lake Achensee

Updated 22.06.2022

Barefoot over flower meadows and then a somersault into the lake: holidays at Lake Achensee stand for carefree ease.

Holidays for families are very important in Tyrol's Sport and Vital Park Achensee. Hardly anywhere else can you experience the most beautiful time of the year as close to nature and unadulterated as on a shared summer holiday between mountain and lake. Days full of variety and real "quality time" are the order of the day on a family holiday at Lake Achensee. The region is also one of the "Tyrolean Family Nests", which are not only committed to high quality criteria for family holidays, but also offer regularly inspected family-friendly accommodation as well as a summer programme accompanied by adventure-pedagogically trained supervisors.

Be active, go on excursions and experience something decent: The annual children's programme, which this year runs from 04 July to 02 September 2022 over the "Naturbühne Achensee", offers young guests great adventures. Bake bread rolls, lend a hand on the farm, fly through the air with the "Flying Fox" or enjoy the happiness of the earth on horseback: The children's programme for 4 to 11 year-olds is fun and joyful. For a joint family outing, the hike with Hen Hanna to the idyllically situated Buchauer Alm, the romantic star walk with glass lanterns or the "night terrain game" in search of enchanted creatures are ideal. This year's youth programme for 10- to 16-year-olds also offers lots of fun and action on water and on land. Rock climbing on the wall, Segways in the Karwendel valleys, stand-up paddleboarding across the lake or big inflatable tyres on the river. Spectacular gorge hiking is also part of the summer programme for young people.

Those who prefer to take it easy and combine a walk or a leisurely hike with games or puzzle experiences are in the right place on the themed trails of the Achensee region. The "Wusel-Seeweg", named after the Achensee mascot "Wusel Wassergeist", is particularly popular and leads along the eastern shore of the lake from Maurach to Achenkirch. There are 15 play stations along the almost four-kilometre-long path. Children can test their sense of balance on the balancing steps, the sound station invites you to an open-air concert, and while the kids test the climbing wall, parents can relax on a giant couch. "Exercise for the mind" awaits at the puzzle station. The "Alpine Animals Circular Trail" is also worth a trip. It leads from the mountain station of the Karwendel cable car via the 1,457-metre-high Bärenbadalm to the Alpengasthaus Karwendel and back again. With a bit of luck, wild hares, chamois or deer can be observed along the easy-to-moderate, three-kilometre-long themed trail. Another highlight along the way are ten stations that provide interesting information about alpine animals.

Around the turquoise-blue Achensee - and even up on the alp - "mountain summer playgrounds" also invite children. The playground at the Gramai Alm, located in the heart of the Karwendel Nature Park, offers a trampoline, slide, swing and modern play stations. The petting zoo there with goats, pot-bellied pigs, ducks and small rabbits is particularly popular. A family excursion destination with a stop for refreshments is the Gern Alm, which can be reached from Pertisau in two hours walking time. The adventure playground "Gimp'l Park" is a main attraction for kids with its climbing tower, ropeway, water play area, swings and toddler slide. Little Achensee guests can also let off steam on a playground at the Gaisalm, which is idyllically located on the lake and can be reached on foot or by boat. And "Ahoy sailor" is the motto on the adventure ship at the "Atoll Achensee" leisure centre. The 31-metre-long ship cruised Lake Achensee for almost 60 years, after which it was converted into an outdoor play paradise. Children can climb a play tower and dangle over suspension bridges and through climbing nets. Around the ship, a low ropes course, a contact swing, a seesaw ensemble and a "flying fox" offer plenty of opportunities for romping around. Younger children can also have fun on a wide and tube slide and in the XXL sandbox.

A real highlight on a family holiday at Lake Achensee is also the opportunity to try climbing and via ferrata together. Around Tyrol's largest lake, countless routes await, which not only offer a special sporting experience, but also magnificent views. Family-friendly climbing gardens include, for example, the "Grubaplatte" in the Rofan Mountains, which is well suited for families due to its moderate difficulty level. Excellent rock quality is also offered by the "Grubastiege" in the Rofan, whose routes are named after famous characters such as Spider Man or Mickey Mouse. For children and climbing novices who want to improve their rope technique, the "Mauritzalm Climbing Garden" is particularly suitable. And you can go on iron routes with the family on the "Felix und Charlotte Familienklettersteig" in the Rofan mountains or the new "Klettersteig Christlumsiedlung", which is a perfect training ground for young and old in the valley.

Arrive, breathe a sigh of relief and dive in - in the region around Tyrol's largest lake, sporting activity, experiencing nature and relaxation are writ large. Nestled between the Karwendel and Rofan mountains, Lake Achensee is a destination for mountain lovers and water rats alike. With the lake shore freely accessible all around and the impressive paths into the valleys of the Karwendel Nature Park, scenic worlds of experience are offered in summer and winter. Whether on foot, by mountain bike, cross-country skis or snowshoes - Lake Achensee inspires and is full of moments that move!
