Zeitgeschichte – Studium Generale Geschichte Von der Teilung Tirols zum vereinten Europa Online-Kurs 2023

The 20th century is considered an "age of extremes", which also left deep traces in Tyrolean regional history. The great traumas of war and disenfranchisement are contrasted by experiences of unprecedented prosperity in the years after 1945. Using selected text and image sources, the course illuminates key political events and important periods such as the First World War and the demarcation of the border at the Brenner Pass, the fascist Italianisation policy, the "Anschluss" of Austria, the resettlement of South Tyroleans and the struggle for South Tyrolean autonomy. Selected examples from economic, cultural, sports and environmental history illustrate the thrust of the social change that Tyrol and South Tyrol underwent during the years of reconstruction and economic boom. The treatment of the examples aims to highlight similarities and differences in the culture of remembrance in both parts of the country and to situate regional history in the Austrian, Italian and European context.
