Acute myocardial infarction is one of the most common causes of death in the western world. It is usually caused by a sudden blockage in one of the coronary arteries, which is caused by a ruptured plaque as part of coronary heart disease. After the fastest possible diagnosis by clinical examination, ECG and the determination of blood markers, the rapid reopening of the occluded coronary vessel in a cardiac catheter laboratory - available around the clock in special cardiac centres - is the first priority.
In his lecture, cardiologist Axel Bauer will report on the optimal treatment of acute myocardial infarction, new research approaches for prevention and therapy and the comprehensive care of myocardial infarction patients through the special logistics of so-called myocardial infarction networks.
