Charles Gounod's Faust, Ambroise Thomas' Mignon and Jules Massenet's Werther are the three best-known operas based on works by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They were all written in France in the second half of the 19th century. There, the representatives of Romanticism in particular were enthusiastic about the German poet and found numerous inspirations in his work. "These stirring scenes, these captivating images", Jules Massenet is said to have exclaimed when he read Goethe's epistolary novel The Sorrows of Young Werther in 1885.
