The film Souls of a River gives us a deep insight into the dark side of our world and questions the foundations of our civilisation. In order not to leave the questions raised in an empty space, we have invited a panel of experts from a wide range of disciplines, the filmmakers and the protagonist Pavlos Pavlidis himself to take part in a panel discussion for the first screenings.

About the film:
Souls of a River was awarded the Grand Diagonale Prize for Best Documentary Film and Best Artistic Editing at Diagonale 2023. We are delighted to be able to present this impressive film in cinemas throughout Austria.
Director Chris Krikellis travels along the Evros River, which marks the EU's southern border between Greece and Turkey, where he meets Pavlos Pavlidis, professor of forensic medicine. As one of the few forensic doctors in north-east Greece, it has become his job to perform autopsies and identify those whose attempts to flee across the river have ended fatally. For over two decades, he has been committed to preserving the dignity of drowned refugees and giving their families the opportunity to say goodbye.
In the impressive visual language of cinematographer Judith Benedikt, the fragility of human identity is revealed on the border between the unknown and home, life and death, memory and forgetting.
