Oliver Mears, the director of the Royal Opera, sets his production in a ruthless world of lavish decadence, corruption and social decay. In his first production for his own company, Mears transposes Verdi's masterpiece into the modern world. In Verdi's rousing opera Rigoletto, conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano, power and innocence and beauty and ugliness are at odds. This special performance of Verdi's Rigoletto marks the 171st anniversary of this opera since its premiere in 1851.
