Queen Anne’s favourites – Spritziges für Holzbläserband 2023
Anne, the last English regent from the House of Stuart and the first queen of the United Kingdom, which was created by the annexation of Scotland in 1707, remained in the collective memory of the British as Good Queen Anne. Although she was not exactly blessed with a sparkling spirit, her reign brought political success and economic prosperity for England. If someone had spoken of Queen Anne's favourites in her time, it would probably have been her notorious, all-too-powerful favourites: The internationally successful young oboe band La Petite Écurie instead refers to favourite composers of the period of upheaval from the Glorious Revolution of 1688 to the accession of the House of Hanover in 1714. Music by Orpheus Britannicus Henry Purcell is not to be missed; but we also encounter Godfrey Finger, who later served as concertmaster in the chapel of Count Palatine Charles Philip in Innsbruck, the recorder player James Paisible, a Frenchman by birth who was in the service of Anne's husband George of Denmark, and a biographically elusive musician named Thomas Morgan, whose musical legacy - a suite - shows him to be an accomplished composer.
