Ostergrab 2024

The Easter Sepulchre painted by Anton Haller in 1837 in the parish church of St. Sigmund in Sellrain is a special feature among the Holy Sepulchres of Tyrol. Instead of the staggered backdrop arches that were still common in the first half of the 19th century, the Holy Sepulchre of St Sigmund is designed as a Passion altar with sacrificial aisle doors facing the altar. A similarly designed Easter tomb can still be seen in Sand in Taufers, today placed in front of the side altar. As the sacristan of Sellrain, Anton Haller created the Easter Sepulchre, as the signature on the back of the right-hand side panel shows "Anton Haller/Messner in Sellrain/gemahlen im Jahr/1837.". With its pictorial narration of the Passion story, the Easter Sepulchre of St Sigmund, which is in the style of Classicism, occupies a special position among the holy tombs in Tyrol. The artist, who until now could only be identified by the signature on the Easter Sepulchre, shows a thoroughly independent style of painting with his compositionally and colourfully balanced work, which is based on a deeply religious attitude. Similarities with the Stations of the Cross in the parish church of St Sigmund suggest that there are other works by the painting sacristan. Viewing possible after the church service.
