Orlando 2025

The handsome nobleman Orlando is held in high esteem at the English court of Queen Elizabeth I. However, the young man soon grows tired of the illusory royal world of the 16th century and is transferred to Constantinople. There he falls into a sleep lasting several days, from which he wakes up transformed into a woman. From then on, Orlando lives with the same identity in a female body and is confronted with the changed demands of his environment. But Orlando defies rigid conventions and gender roles. She remains eternally young, lives through four centuries and the peculiarities of the different eras. She enjoys encounters with historical literary greats and savours everything her fabulous life and her fellow human beings have to offer with infinite joie de vivre, lightness and curiosity.

The British author Virginia Woolf portrays Orlando's life as a dazzlingly humorous fictional biography. It is the tale of a fantastic existence that joyfully throws social norms overboard in favour of self-determination.
