Austrian history encompasses more than the territory of today's Republic of Austria. From the early modern period onwards, the Habsburgs exercised power over many areas of Central and Eastern Europe. The age of confessionalisation (Reformation and Counter-Reformation) and the Enlightenment brought about changes that gradually turned these different dominions into a territorial state. This development came to a conclusion in the course of the 19th century and was not without conflict: for example, in the emergence of nationalism in the various ethnic groups, in social and economic tensions in the course of early capitalist industrialisation, in the disregard for religious rights and in the equality of women as citizens. In the last decades of the Austro-Hungarian Dual Monarchy, urbanisation and modernisation broadened life opportunities for large sections of the population and a profound and gradual social transformation began to take place. The course will also focus on the interlocking history of today's Austria with its neighbours.
