1750, Venice, Teatro Sant'Angelo. Harlequinades and buffoonery bring fewer and fewer audiences to the theatre. Goldoni has a dream, an intuition. He is convinced that the theatre needs a "reform" and that the only way is to offer the audience a comedy of character and manners based on Molière's model instead of commedia dell'arte. But he also knows that he will attract countless critics and attacks. So he needs allies, comrades-in-arms. And he finds them in the actress Maddalena Raffi. She is experienced, humorous, tired of the improv routine and hungry for "real" roles. But Goldoni is not only taken with Maddalena's acting skills, he is also very attracted to her in other ways.
