The love between Lucia and Edgardo is not only a private tragedy, but a story about power that can destroy human relationships at their core. The premiere in 1835 was one of the greatest triumphs the Neapolitan theatre had ever experienced. Much of this success, which continues to this day, was due to Lucia's famous mad aria, one of the most moving operatic scenes ever.
