The year is 1973: When 15-year-old Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) catches sight of photo assistant Alana Kane (Alana Haim), he is smitten. Although she is ten years older, the self-confident teenager persuades her to have dinner at his favourite restaurant. Paying is no problem for him, because Gary is both a child actor and a budding entrepreneur who has already started his own PR company. Alana and Gary then become increasingly close friends, start a waterbed business together and from then on can't do without each other, but the exciting life in the San Fernado Valley follows its own laws...
