Fred Hersch, born 1955 in Cincinnati/Ohio, is an American jazz pianist and composer who belongs to the New York jazz scene. Known as a border crosser between jazz and classical music, the musician influenced by Bill Evans has dedicated himself to an impressionistic style. More than 25 albums already document his work. Fred Hersch is also a master of improvisation and often performs together with musicians from the classical scene, for example with his colleague Jeffrey Kahane and with symphony orchestras. He teaches at music conservatories in Boston, New York and Michigan; Brad Mehldau is his student. His autobiography Good Things Happen Slowly was published in 2017. He has won many awards and was named Jazz Pianist of the Year in 2016.
