Kakao mit Zukunft – Produzentin im Weltlade Innsbruck zu Gast 2022

To kick off the chocolate season, Weltladen Innsbruck in cooperation with EZA Fairer Handel invites you to a talk with cocoa farmer Domitila Irigoyin Gálvez from Peru. On Tuesday, 18 October 2022 at 19:00 in the Leokino*, she will talk first-hand about her life and work in the Amazon region and why she joined the Norandino cooperative.

"As a woman, I am proud to produce quality cocoa. It is important to me. It provides income for my family and my children's education," says Domitila Irigoyin Gálvez. The 51-year-old single mother lives with her 16-year-old daughter in a hamlet in the Peruvian Amazon region. She is a typical smallholder farmer, like so many in cocoa farming, and cultivates a total of three hectares of land. Cocoa grows on one hectare. In combination with banana trees and various tree species, it thrives in what is known as an agroforestry system. This strengthens biodiversity, increases soil fertility and expands the range of products for the company's own needs, for example with fruit. No chemicals are used. The cocoa farmer farms organically. This also applies to her organic garden. She also keeps small animals. They generate additional income and provide manure, which is used to produce organic fertiliser.
