Ausstellung: Trachten des Alpenraumes 2024

A historical view

The local history museum is showing a small but fine exhibition of paintings by Telf artist Jakob Auer.
Music bands, marksmen or processions would probably seem strange today without traditional costumes.
Traditional costumes have always been around, create identity and are simply part of it! Or are they not? Tracht comes from "to wear" and until the 19th century simply meant clothing. There was no such thing as a completely uniform costume for all the inhabitants of a region. The cuts were quite similar, but the colours and fabrics were never uniform. In addition, the rural population tended to follow urban fashion.
It was only with the rise of tourism and the so-called "salon tyroleans" that traditional costumes became fashionable, especially among the urban bourgeoisie. People longed for the rural idyll. In photo studios, you could borrow a traditional costume and pose in front of a painted backdrop.

Are wearing traditional costume, being part of so-called folk culture and being cosmopolitan mutually exclusive?
Does it have to be either/or? Or can both be lived together?
