The Triumphpforte, located between Leopoldstraße, Maria Theresien Straße, Maximilanstraße and Salurner Straße, is one of Innsbruck's landmarks. The Triumphpforte is the former southern exit of the city. The Triumphpforte was built in 1765 for the wedding of a son of Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Franz Stephan of Lorraine.
The motif of the Triumphal Gate was slightly modified after the wedding due to the unexpected death of Emperor Franz. The north side shows motifs referring to his death. The south side tells of joy and the wedding.
The monument was built from the old stones from the suburban gate. Thus, a bit of the early history of Innsbruck is still anchored in the Triumphal Gate today.
