The Tannheimer Tal, nestled against the majestic backdrop of the Tyrolean mountains, is a true Eldorado for hiking enthusiasts and nature lovers. With its extensive alpine meadows, crystal-clear mountain lakes and impressive flora and fauna, the valley offers a unique nature experience. It is no coincidence that the high valley was crowned Austria's most beautiful hiking region by the hiking magazine in 2019.
From the valley to the summit - the three hiking levels in the Tannheimer Tal
On three levels with over 300 kilometres of hiking trails , there is plenty on offer for mountain sports enthusiasts. Whether leisurely hiking trails, interesting themed trails or attractive via ferrata routes - the Tannheimer Tal offers everything to make a hiker's heart beat faster. The valley hikes on the first level lead along easy and well-developed paths through the idyllic valley and are ideal for family excursions or leisurely walks. A highlight on this level is the path to Vilsalpsee, which leads past several resting places that invite you to linger. On the second hiking level , themed trails and easy to moderately difficult hiking routes without long ascents as well as panoramic trails await young and old. Particularly recommended is the smugglers' trail, a themed hiking trail that recalls the smuggling history of the region and offers exciting information and interactive stations. After the ascent with the Wannenjochbahn cable car from Schattwald, you head straight onto the trail, followed by a breezy ridge hike over the Tyrolean border to the Iseler.
The trail combines an experience of nature with historical knowledge and makes hiking an educational pleasure. The more challenging tours on the third level leadto the peaks of the Tyrolean high valley and are intended for experienced hikers. Sure-footedness and a good level of fitness are required to tackle the steep paths. Popular destinations are the Gimpel (2,176 metres) and the Rote Flüh (2,108 metres), which offer breathtaking panoramas and an incomparable experience.
Challenges at lofty heights
In addition to the hiking trails, the Tannheimer Tal also offers a variety of via ferratas suitable for climbing fans of all levels of difficulty. Particularly popular is the Lachenspitze via ferrata, an enjoyable tour for all climbing enthusiasts. With a length of 2.37 kilometres and 358 vertical metres to conquer, this via ferrata offers a perfect combination of vertical adventure and scenic enjoyment.
