On 11 June 2023, the two-week competition of superlatives will start in Kitzbühel on the Hahnenkamm. Almost 30 athletes will cross the Alps on foot and by paraglider to be the fastest to the finish line.
The Red Bull X-Alps is the toughest adventure race in the world. It is an almost two-week competition in which around 30 athletes run, hike and paraglide up to 150 kilometres per day through the Alps. They pass well-known mountains and resorts, which are marked as turning points. As the athletes often have to tackle vertical climbs of up to 4,000 metres per day and walk up to 100 kilometres, it is not only an incredible test of physical endurance, but has also established itself as the ultimate challenge for the world's best hike-and-fly athletes.
New starting point
For the first time since 2007, this year's race will start at a location other than Salzburg. It will start on 11 June 2023 at the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel, which previously served as one of the race's turnpoints and is best known for the world-famous Hahnenkamm Race. At 1,223 kilometres, the route is similar in length to 2021, which does not increase the level of difficulty, but still represents an epic challenge. But it is still an epic challenge. The route runs anti-clockwise and ends in Zell am See in Salzburg.
20th anniversary
The Red Bull X-Alps is open only to the best paragliding pilots and adventure athletes in the world, with men and women competing on an equal footing. The race was founded in 2003 by the late adventurer Hannes Arch and has been held every two years since then. The 2023 edition will therefore mark the 20th anniversary of the legendary race.
