The Reutte Nature Park region experienced an unforgettable day on 24 September. As a striking highlight of the 2023 mountain autumn, the 23rd International Älplerletze in the picturesque mountain world of Hahnenkamm attracted hundreds of shepherds and guests. This traditional farewell ritual for the mountain summer focused on community and culture.
The event began with a moving mountain devotion at an altitude of almost 1800 metres. Framed by the sounds of around 40 alphorn blowers from the cross-border cooperation Euregio Via Salina, a sense of community and gratitude permeated those present. Deacon Patrick Gleffe emphasised the importance of the summit experiences and expressed his gratitude for the peaceful moments that mark the end of the alpine summer. The festive sounds of the "Schellenschwenker" from the Swiss canton of Graubünden enhanced the idyllic setting of the Hahnenkamm.
Hermann Ruepp, chairman of the tourism association Naturparkregion Reutte, Christian Angerer, economist and district chairman of the farmers' association, and Dr. Michael Honisch, managing director of the alpine farming association in Allgäu, paid tribute to the shepherds and cultivated farmers. They emphatically stressed the essential role of alpine pasture farming in the region and the continuing importance of traditional customs. In particular, they emphasised the tireless commitment and perseverance of the shepherds and alpine farmers, who work tirelessly to preserve the cultural heritage and protect nature.
As a special highlight, the children of the Höfen traditional costume group delighted those present. The event culminated in the joint final concert of all alphorn players, accompanied by the traditional bell raffle.
Thanks to the organisation of the Bergbahnen Hahnenkamm, the Tannheimer Tal and the Alpwirtschaftlichen Verein im Allgäu, the 23rd Älplerletze combined culture, tradition and cross-border cooperation into an impressive whole - a testimony to the unity and pride of the mountain regions that also make the mountain autumn in the Reutte Nature Park region so distinctive.
