The Genussherbst in the Wildschönau comes up trumps with a colourful programme. The focus is on Krautinger, a schnapps made from the white stubble beet, which is only available in the Wildschönau. The valley celebrates this speciality during the Krautinger Week from 24 September to 1 October.
After the Almkirchtagen and the colourful Almabtriebs festivals, the Krautinger Week starts on 24 September. At the Weisenbläsertreffen on the Schatzberg, soft tones resound, giving melody to the hiking autumn. No wonder that the Wildschönau is also called the "Valley of Music". During the week, other music events and the craft market are on the programme. If you want to take a look behind the scenes at the producers, the best thing to do is join a farm visit.
Krautinger, the unique schnapps made from the white stubble beet, is only distilled in the Wildschönau. Whether for pleasure or medicine, you should always try it. The region owes this speciality to Empress Maria-Theresia: in the 18th century she granted the people of Wildschönau the right to distil high-proof schnapps from the turnips. But the famous Wildschönau turnip is not only available in liquid form: Traditional dishes are also experiencing a renaissance. At the end of September/beginning of October, the innkeepers of the region cook specialities from the former poor people's vegetable. You should try beetroot foam soup or beetroot mud doughnuts.
After the festive harvest festival in Oberau, the Kirchtag begins at 1 pm at the zBach Mountain Farm Museum. The premises of the old farm, the Tenn and the cosy Anger provide the perfect setting for this event.
The Bundesmusikkapelle Mühltal opens the Kirchtag with music. The Wildschönauer Sturmlöda do this in their own, loud way! Craftsmen show their skills and local farmers present their homemade products from the farm. Genuine Tyrolean folk music provides musical entertainment.
Culinary delights are on offer: There is a queue for the famous "Brodakrapfen" made by the farmers' wives or for the lard noodles from the ancient museum kitchen. Associations also cater for the physical well-being.
Of course, one or the other stout of Krautinger is not to be missed!
In the afternoon, the "Krautinger of the Year 2023" will be presented. Under expert guidance, a jury of experts will taste various Krautinger and then choose the winner: the Krautinger farmers of the Wildschönau are on the rise.
Don't worry, autumn is far from over with the conclusion of the Krautinger Week: the mountain railways in the Wildschönau are open until mid-October, huts and alpine pastures entice you to stop for a bite to eat and the clear distant views ensure pure autumn magic.
