For the ninth time, the Handbike Battle started in Kaunertal on 22 June. More than 100 participants took part in the spectacular competition. An international field of participants took on the physical challenge.
The Handbike Battle in the Kaunertal took place this year in perfect weather conditions. The competition not only aroused the enthusiasm of professionals. Numerous participants, motivated and accompanied by their carers, trained for a long time for this event in order to conquer the challenging course. More than 850 spectacular metres of altitude, spread over about 20 kilometres of glacier road, kept the athletes on their toes. The start was at the toll station at 1,287 metres above sea level, from where the participants fought their way to the Ochsenalm. The majority of the athletes travelled from one of the Dutch centres for paraplegic rehabilitation. In addition to the sporting demands and the improvement of physical fitness, the participants particularly appreciate the mentally strengthening effect of the competition on the glacier. Dietmar Walser, managing director of the tourism association, is thrilled by the sporting performance, but also by the joy and great atmosphere of all participants and thanks the organisers, partners and locals for the great cooperation.
The Kaunertal offers the best conditions as a venue for the Handbike Battle. In terms of accessibility, the region is accessible up to the high alpine location of over 3,000 metres above sea level. The nature park and glacier region offers people with physical disabilities, mobility-impaired people and also families with prams a holiday and stay without hurdles. Kaunertal has already received several awards for its perfect barrier-free infrastructure.
