But once a year, on the occasion of the Thiersee Triathlon, the natural bathing lake is transformed into a Mecca for endurance heroes. On Sunday, 13 August 2023, women, men, youths and children will once again make their way in hundreds to this very special outdoor sports arena to engage in thrilling competitions. The fifth edition once again offers the perfect combination of sporting challenge and enjoyment of nature.
The five competitions allow athletes of all ages and abilities to test their limits. As usual, the professionals among the participants have the choice between two distances: in Olympic style, the short triathlon involves a 1.5 km swim, 40 km bike and 10 km run. The competitors in this event also have the chance to be crowned Tyrolean champion. Those who choose the sprint distance will run half the distance.
The relay runners are also challenged on the same course. The tried and tested mixed relay competition will be supplemented this year by an all-women's or all-men's relay. Those who want to get a taste of triathlon for the first time will be in good hands in the Everyman event. And also the youngsters can compete with their peers in the children's triathlon. Also new in the programme is the running bike challenge for those born in 2018 and later.
At 9 a.m., the first triathletes will plunge into the crystal-clear waters of Lake Thiersee and do their laps. Then it's time to pedal hard - the hilly bike course has many a climb in store for the more advanced cyclists. First you head towards Kufstein to the Edschlössl and from there into the idyllic Schmiedtal and back again. Afterwards, the run along the beautiful lakeside promenade of the Thiersee requires a lot of fat in the legs and an extra portion of endurance. The numerous spectators at the finish area at the lido in Thiersee provide a good atmosphere and a motivational boost on the last metres.
"The participants do not have to walk long distances to change from the water to the bike and then start running. And for the public there will also be a lot on offer away from the competitions - from beach volleyball, the Jolsport shop to the playground. Hardly any other event can offer so many possibilities in such a small space," says organiser Thomas Trainer from the Tri & Run Thiersee club, emphasising the special features of this major event. For the fifth edition he hopes for support from Peter: "As with every outdoor event, the weather plays a big role. Here I would hope for not too hot, not too windy - and of course an accident-free course!"
Those who don't want to miss out on the sporting spectacle should secure a starting place as soon as possible. Online registration at www.thiersee-triathlon.at is open until 10 August. There is a special treat for children up to 14 years of age: those who register by 31 July will receive a gift worth 39 euros. This gift will also be given to all participants of the running bike challenge, which leads from the water slide of the lido to the beach volley court and ends with a short run. Registrations for this can be made at info@thiersee-triathlon.at
