Bierkönig Gambrinus überbringt Einladung zum Gauder Fest

Updated 16.03.2023

From 4 to 7 May, the Gauder Fest will once again take place in Zell im Ziller. The tradition of Austria's largest spring and traditional costume festival now also includes personal invitations from regional politicians. Beer King Gambrinus, the patron saint of brewers and the festival, therefore delivered the invitation to the Gauder Fest to Governor Anton Mattle, the members of the provincial government and the political representatives of the clubs in the provincial parliament.

Beer King Gambrinus, accompanied by Martin Lechner (Managing Director of Zillertal Bier), Robert Pramstrahler (Mayor of Zell am Ziller), Christian Daum (Managing Director of TVB Zell-Gerlos) and Oswald Gredler (representative of the Provincial Costume Association) once again invited the provincial politicians to the traditional Gauder Fest, which takes place in May. The official opening of the Gauder Fest takes place on Friday and already starts with a highlight. The traditional tapping of the Bock beer by Governor Anton Mattle will kick off the festivities. "I am looking forward to continuing the long-standing tradition and to officially opening the Gauder Fest with the beer tapping," says Governor Mattle.

Exciting supporting programme over four days

Already on Thursday there will be a musical kick-off with the Radio U1 Tirol Gauder Fest prelude, featuring bands such as the Grubertaler, Juhe aus Tirol, the young Zillertaler, Läts Fetz and two surprise star guests in a class of their own - both absolute stars in the German-speaking world. Gauder Freitag is the social highlight. After the Bockbieranstich and the eagerly awaited Gambrinus speech by Luis from South Tyrol, where local politicians can expect pointed comments and a lot of wordplay, two programme-packed weekend days follow.

The Gauder Saturday is all about the competition and the young artists. It starts with the mountain goat show followed by the judging and awarding of prizes for the animals. Another real crowd-puller is the "Ranggeln". In gripping duels, the strongest men in the Alpine region fight for the title of "Gauder Hogmoar" and are cheered on by the spectators. For those who would like to take it a little easier besides the competitions, there is the opportunity to do so at the craft and farmers' market, where culinary delicacies and goods typical of the Zillertal, such as doggln, satchels or carvings, can be found.

Gauder Saturday is also the "Day of the Trachtler Youth". As part of a magnificent procession, the young Trachtler:innen parade into the Zillertal Beer Festival Tent. Once there, they get the audience off the benches with their rhythmic dancing. This year, for the first time, the festival tent is open to the public in the afternoon for this part of the programme. The Gauder poster 2023 also has the Trachtler youth as its motif: it shows a girl in original Zillertal traditional costume - the "Zeller Lisa" - in front of a mighty mountain landscape and an abstract house façade. With this design, the Schwaz artist Susanne Liner creates a balancing act between tradition and the future. The grand finale of the Gauder Fest will take place on Sunday. Around 2,200 traditional costumed people make the procession the largest in Austria and let the streets of Zell am Ziller shine in a blaze of colour.

Festival beer specialities from Zillertal Bier

Zillertal Bier is firmly associated with the Gauder Fest and makes a significant contribution to the uniqueness of the event. The legendary Zillertal Gauder Bock, for example, is brewed especially for the festivities. It is matured for eight months beforehand and, at 7.8 percent by volume, is the strongest festival beer in Austria. Another speciality is the Zillertal Gauder Steinbock. The bock beer speciality is brewed according to a recipe from the 1920s and impresses with an alcohol content of 10.4 percent by volume. In addition to the two festival beers, there are many other Zillertal beer specialities and special beers for beer lovers to taste at the Gauder Fest.
