Experience Zillertal tradition up close
Traditional music and events fill the Zillertal autumn with a lot of joie de vivre. Every year, the Almabtrieb is one of the highlights of autumn and an integral part of the farming season: After the summer, it is time for cattle and herdsmen to return to the valley - pure Zillertal culture!
At the traditional Schaflschoade on 09 September in Gerlos, the sheep return from the alpine pastures in the Schönach Valley to the valley, where they are sheared in the centre of Gerlos. The autumn festival with music and culinary delicacies opens with the marching in of the Gerlos Federal Music Band.
At the Almabtrieb festivals in Zell and Gerlos on 23 September, the farmers make their way home to the valley with their proudly "tufted" alpine cattle. In both villages, this festival is celebrated with a varied supporting programme and musical entertainment. Specialities and typical Zillertal delicacies such as Zillertaler Krapfen, Kasspatzln and Melchermuas make the hearts of gourmets beat faster. But the old handicrafts are not neglected in this programme either, basket weaving, carving or even distilling schnapps are demonstrated.
Regionality is also promised by the Zillertal Farmers' Markets in Zell and Gerlos, where it is important to take advantage of the opportunity to visit the local stall holders - the last Zillertal Farmers' Market in Zell am Ziller will take place on 20 September and in Gerlos on 21 September 2023.
