Schwaz silver mining runs like a silver thread through the twelve communities of the Karwendel Silver Region. From 11 May 2023, "long-distance hikers" can follow this thread on five stages of the Tyrolean Silver Trail, a new long-distance hiking trail on both sides of the Inn River.
Hiking over long distances was part of everyday life for our ancestors. Also for the Schwaz miners, who marched day after day from the surrounding villages to Schwaz and down the Knappensteig to the silver mine. Today, most people hike in their free time to do something good for themselves and to find a balance to their work. Long-distance hiking is one of the healthiest endurance sports. It has a positive effect on the heart and circulation, blood pressure, coronary vessels and sugar balance. But regardless of whether it is for health, for sporting activity, out of interest in culture and history, or out of pure enthusiasm for nature: the new Tyrolean Silver Trail in the Karwendel Silver Region provides "reasons to walk" for all hikers. And it is not stingy with attractions between the Karwendel and the Tux Pre-Alps, the Inn and the wild waters of the region, typical Tyrolean villages and lovely mountain terraces.
The Tyrolean Silver Trail starts at Jenbach railway station and leads up and down through all 12 municipalities of the Karwendel Silver Region over a distance of around 86 kilometres and 3,360 metres in altitude. It offers the best opportunity to get to know the most beautiful corners of the Tyrolean Lower Inn Valley. Five days with 13 to 20 kilometre stages each are planned for the easy to moderately difficult round tour at medium altitudes. On the way, you will be rewarded with ever new perspectives and extraordinary nature and power spots that can only be discovered on foot. Along the Tyrolean Silver Trail you not only embark on a nature experience, but also on a journey into the past of the 15th and 16th centuries. To a time when the Karwendel Silver Region was known as the largest mining metropolis in the world. The historical story of the region runs like a "silver thread" through the entire route of the Tyrolean Silver Trail. There is a wealth of information and stories about the history at the information stations in each of the twelve municipalities.
Furthermore, there are numerous sights in the communities that are connected to silver mining. From Jenbach the route goes via Stans, Vomp and Terfens upstream along the Inn at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains, then it changes to the other side of the Inn. From Weer, Kolsass via Kolsassberg, Weerberg, Pill, Schwaz to Gallzein and Buch in Tyrol, the hikers are on their way at the foot and on the plateaus of the Tux Pre-Alps. Fantastic views of the Inn valley and the Karwendel mountains are included. And there are also beautiful descents and ascents - always with the opportunity to go your own way, to experience culture and history in between, to recharge your batteries at rest and snack stops or to find cosy accommodation for the night. The best time to hike is from May to October. Tyrolean Silver Trail - Karwendel Silver Region (silberregion-karwendel.com)
