When the first leaves fall from the trees and the fog rises thicker in the evening, summer is visibly coming to an end. But the people of Wildschönau are not known for their autumn blues. On the contrary: they welcome autumn with traditional festivals. At the Almkirchtag, which is celebrated on the Norderbergalm and on the Schönangeralm at the beginning of September, people first get in the mood for the third season at a church service and then at a cosy get-together.
The Gruh-Nacht in the WildschönauTraditionsare very much cultivated in the Wildschönau. The Gruh-Nacht, for example, is the last night before "going home" and is celebrated in a correspondingly cheerful manner, depending on the alpine pasture. Today the alpine farmers, family and neighbours of the alpine farmer meet in the hut for a cosy hucker - with a hearty meal, e.g. a Melchermus - and on some alpine pastures even with musical accompaniment. After the Gru night, the animals are milked, the rest of the things are packed and the cows are decorated (which is also called "aufbischen" ). The preparations for this take many days. Together they then head down into the valley.
Many colourfully decorated animals arrive in the valley around noon on 16 September. The Wildschönau Almabtrieb has remained a traditional Almabtrieb. At the Schatzbergbahn fairground in Auffach, the Almfest takes place from 10:00 am - a festival for locals and guests alike.
The "Bundesmusikkapelle Auffach" opens the Almfest in a fitting manner. The "Wüd-Brix-Musigr" will then play lively music at the festival site and create a great atmosphere.
At the handicraft and farmers' market you can buy local products, including the famous cheese made by Johann Schönauer from the Schönangeralm.
The village's associations and pubs will provide the perfect culinary setting, including the farmers' wives with their popular "Brodakrapfen"
Admission to the Almabtrieb is FREE.
Almererfeste usually last until late into the night, because there is a lot to tell - about the long alpine summer in the Wildschönau. Almabtriebsfeste take place in all four villages of the high valley.
Preview: Wildschönau Krautinger Week At the end of the autumn festivities, the Krautinger Week takes place. The programme includes farm-to-farm visits, a music programme, a craft market and the big Museum Church Day on 1 October.
