Time to "Hoamfohn" in the Brixental Valley

Updated on 09.09.2022

It's "herbstlt" and that means it's time for the cattle on the alpine pastures of the Kitzbühel Alps to return to the valley. As part of the traditional cattle drives, which celebrate the return of the animals, alpine festivals are held in Brixental Valley on 17 and 24 September. Regional delicacies, traditional music and old craftsmanship are served up.

If the summer was accident-free, the animals are decorated with wreaths of fir greenery, colourful ribbons, bells, mirrors and alpine flowers in the morning before they return to the mountain pasture - in the dialect "aufbischt". Afterwards, the cattle return to the meadows in the valley. In Brixental Valley, this so-called "Hoamfahrt" has a long tradition and is typically celebrated with alpine festivals. On 17 September, for example, alpine festivals are held in Brixen, Kirchberg and Westendorf, where you can experience traditional music, craftsmanship and local specialities as well as a view of the magnificently decorated animals. A week later, the cattle drive is celebrated at Hotel Elisabeth in Kirchberg.
