PREHANG up for the new ski season. Winter is already welcomed on the Kaunertal Glacier in autumn. Wide glacier slopes on natural snow await skiers. There are a total of 55 kilometres of pistes to ski, three of which go up to over 3000 metres - and snow is guaranteed from October to May. Thanks to the modern Falgin, Karles and Weißseejoch lifts, there is no need to queue at the lifts. In addition, the ski area is 100 percent barrier-free. When skiing, fun should be in the foreground, but without nature and climate taking a back seat. That's why the entire Kaunertal pays attention to sustainability, closeness to nature and the conservation of resources. And it is precisely for this reason that Kaunertal was the only place in Austria to be awarded the "Best Tourism Village" in 2021.
Skiing on the glacier and the steepest slope in AustriaDidyou know? The Kaunertal Glacier ski area has the steepest piste in Austria. With a gradient of 87.85 percent, the Black Ibex is steeper than the Mausefalle on the legendary Streif in Kitzbühel (85 percent). The Black Ibex is something for real daredevils. The ski season starts on the glacier as early as autumn on 55 kilometres of groomed slopes. 36 kilometres of off-piste runs and 138 hectares of piste await ski fans with guaranteed snow from October to June. The longest run is five kilometres long with a difference in altitude of 963 metres from Falginjoch (3,113 metres) to Ochsenalm (2,150 metres).
Resource-saving ski operationThenew Weißseejochbahn on the Kaunertal Glacier went into operation last December. The new lift runs from the middle station of the Ochsenalm lift (2,494 metres) to the Weißseejoch (3,044 metres). It was equipped with an energy-efficient direct drive, and the station building, like that of the Karlesjochbahn, also has a new photovoltaic system. This covers 40 per cent of the energy required to operate the mountain railways. In the wind-stable Falginjochbahn, the braking energy is also recovered as electricity and the waste heat from the system is used for heating. One cabin has room for 100 people, and the ride up to 3,113 metres takes only about three minutes.
Online ski ticket with a generous early booking discount Those whobook early really save: if you buy your ski ticket for the Kaunertal Glacier online, you can get up to 30 percent early booking discount. The earlier you book, the cheaper the ski ticket. This not only saves you cash, but also saves you queuing at the ticket office. Even better: one ski ticket is valid for two ski areas. In addition to the glacier, Fendels is also included in the offer. A small but fine family ski area with 15 kilometres of pistes - including a children's area, snow park and ski touring park. A 2-day ski pass or more also includes one day on the Pitztal Glacier. Children up to the age of 8 ski for free.
100 percent barrier-free skiingareaWhetherwith prams, wheelchairs or monoskis - in Kaunertal everything is accessible barrier-free from the valley up to 3,113 metres above sea level. Thanks to the construction of the new gondola lifts, the glacier is now 100 percent barrier-free and all guests can experience the Kaunertal mountain world at the Italian state border three times at over 3,000 metres without any restrictions. All lifts as well as the restaurant are easily accessible for all visitors, and monoskiers have been given their own access to the Falginjochbahn. Two barrier-free kilometres are also available for cross-country skiers.
Freeriding on the finest powder snowHigh upthrough the finest powder snow. The Kaunertal Glacier is one of the best freeride locations in the Alps. Freshly snowed-in powder slopes, bright sunshine and still untracked runs make freeriding a real experience. 36 kilometres of off-piste runs on seven routes are waiting to be discovered. The glacier safari is also unforgettable: with a freeride guide, at least 4,000 metres of powder runs and a descent in the free ski area from the Weißseejoch to South Tyrol are on the programme.Mark in your diary: 18/19 March 2023 is the date for the "Kaunertal Freeride Days". The free test festival offers workshops, non-binding material tests, free piste bully transport up to the Nörderjoch, as well as live music and DJs in the "Riders Lounge".
Ski touring park on the Winterberg Fendels for beginners and professionalsEnjoying thesilence of winter and the untouched snowy landscape is what the beautiful ski tours on the Winterberg Fendels are best for. Since December 2020, there is the ski touring park with three routes and different levels of difficulty. The ski touring park is located not far from the mountain lifts. There is a separate ascent route each - to the Fendler Alm, to the Sattelklause and to the Ochsenkopf - for ski tour beginners, experienced tourers and tour professionals to choose from. Nature lovers also get their money's worth here, because ski tours have many advantages: On the ascent you enjoy the peace and beauty of the snow-covered mountains of Tyrol. You breathe in the fresh mountain air and can set your own pace while walking.
Fun in the valley with cross-country skiing, tobogganing and winter hikingEventhose who are not looking for downhill action are in good hands in Kaunertal. Cross-country skiers can look forward to a fine network of trails, with 25 kilometres for the "classics" and 18.5 kilometres for skaters. On the Kaunertal cross-country trail, which runs through the entire valley, you can get on almost directly in front of the hotel door.Absolutely worthwhile are also the winter and snowshoe hikes on perfectly cleared paths. Especially in the Kaunertal Nature Park and on the Winterberg Fendels, there are many hiking trails, most of which are also barrier-free. Highlights include the hike to the Adlerblick and Fendels viewing platforms as well as the Harberund hike.Tobogganing fans will find toboggan runs throughout the valley. An absolute must are the natural toboggan run of the Fendels mountain railways - a proud 4.5 kilometres long - and the family-friendly, two-kilometre-long run in Feichten to the Ögghöfen. Sledge hire is available at several locations.
Arrival in the Best Tourism VillageTheKaunertal was awarded the "Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO" seal in 2021 by the UN World Tourism Organisation as one of 44 worldwide tourism destinations. This is an honour for sustainable and future-oriented tourism, which the alpine valley has been practising for a long time, as well as the many valuable projects for climate change in cooperation with the local population. The Kaunertal was the first and only candidate in Austria to receive this award. The region can be reached via the Kaunertal Glacier Road, which leads over about 26 kilometres into the fascinating mountain world. The train takes you to Zams/Landeck. From there you can get to Feichten by public bus, which has been running almost hourly since last summer, by taxi (the journey takes about 25 minutes) or, if necessary, by shuttle service from the hotel.
