Weltrekordversuch am Pitztaler Gletscher geglückt

Updated 27.10.2022

Günther Gold from Ötztal-Bahnhof did it and flew the highest model helicopter show in the world at the weekend at an altitude of 3,440 metres at Cafè 3440 on the Pitztal Glacier. No one has ever managed this at this altitude before.

The thin air at an altitude of 3,440 metres and the weather situation on the Pitztal Glacier - stronger gusts of wind were forecast for the weekend - were considered the biggest challenges before Günther Gold from Ötztal Bahnhof attempted the world record. But he was able to master both and actually fly the highest model helicopter show in the world for over 5 minutes.

"In the morning there was still a thick blanket of fog over Café 3440 and it had been alternately raining and snowing. I thought it would be very difficult. But towards the afternoon the weather got better and better and in the end it went perfectly," Günther Gold sums up. "I am overjoyed to have actually made it."

According to the specifications of the Record Institute Germany (RID), which is checking the new world record, Günther Gold's model helicopter had to be in the air for at least five minutes, completing specified flight manoeuvres. Gold started the model flight show after sunset. Accompanied by a specially compiled music programme, Gold conjured up colourful LED projections in the night sky on the Pitztal Glacier with his model helicopter and was able to fly all the manoeuvres according to plan.

"We warmly congratulate Günther Gold on his successful world record attempt on the Pitztal Glacier," explains Anna Grießer from the Pitztal Glacier. "Not only did he set a new world record, he also enchanted everyone present with his show." Numerous onlookers had come to Café 3440 on the Pitztaler for the spectacle.
