On 17.06.2022, the Gschnitztal waterway was officially opened during a 2-day family festival organised by the JUFA Hotel Wipptal, Tunnelwelten and the TVB Wipptal.
The new waterway in the Gschnitztal was realised through an Interreg project, the total costs amount to € 60,000 for the northern Wipptal - here the TVB Wipptal was the project sponsor. The project partner in the southern Wipptal was the Gossensass Tourist Association, which built a water trail in the Pflerschtal. In the case of the Gschnitztal water trail, the already existing infrastructure was included. For example, the Herrenwasserl, the hand Kneipp basin and the small Kneipp canal between Trins and Gschnitz were renovated. New benches and wooden loungers invite you to rest and linger at several places. These were made by the Amort blacksmith's shop in Matrei. At the Sarnthein waterfall in Trins, a viewing platform was built that promises cooling even on hot days.
The Gschnitztal water trail is primarily aimed at families. The content on the information boards is prepared in such a way that it is also interesting for children.
The two water drops Gossy and Gschnitzy accompany the hikers and cyclists along the trail and guide them from one station to the next, imparting a lot of interesting information about water in a playful way, e.g. about the formation of the glaciers in the Ice Age, about the creatures in mountain streams and in the landscape pond or the wet meadows and spring bogs of the Trinser Möser. In addition, you pass two adventurous playgrounds. The water trail starts at the Bergeralm valley station or from Steinach railway station (10-minute walk to the Bergeralm). It is also possible to start from Trins. You hike pleasantly without much difference in altitude mostly along the Gschnitzbach stream on trails 49 and 50 to the mill village of Gschnitz. All in all, there are 13 stations along the trail on a length of approx. 15 km, which are dedicated to the topic of water. The information boards are attached to the back of the new resting benches. Each panel has a QR code that can be scanned using the "Mein Bankerl" app. A riddle opens, and those who answer at least 6 questions receive a small surprise in the mill village of Gschnitz or in the TVB Wipptal office in Steinach.
Flyers with the route are available at the TVB Wipptal in Steinach town hall.
