Of the Gruh Night & the Almabtrieb

Updated 06.09.2022

After a long summer in the alpine pastures, the animals and dairymen will soon be heading home. Before that, they celebrate their farewells at the Gruh-Nacht

The Gruh-Nachtin the WildschönauTraditionsare very much cultivated in the Wildschönau. The Gruh Night, for example, is the last night before the "journey home" and is celebrated in a correspondingly cheerful manner, depending on the alpine pasture. Today, the alpine farmers, family and neighbours of the alpine farmer meet in the hut for a cosy hucker - with hearty food, e.g. a Melchermus - and on some alpine pastures even with musical accompaniment. After the Gru night, the animals are milked, the rest of the things are packed and the cows are decorated (which is also called "aufbischen" ). The preparations for this take many days. Together they then head down into the valley

Many colourfully decorated animals arrive in the valley around noon on 24 September. The Wildschönau Almabtrieb has remained a traditional Almabtrieb

At the Schatzbergbahn car park in Auffach, the Almfest takes place from 10:00 a.m. - a festival for locals and guests alike

The "Bundesmusikkapelle Auffach" opens the Almfest in a fitting manner. The "Trio Klingler" will then play lively music at the festival site and create a great atmosphere.

At the craft and farmers' market you can buy local products, including the famous cheese from the Schönangeralm

The village's associations and pubs will provide the perfect culinary setting, including the farmers' wives with their popular "Brodakrapfen"

Admission to the Almabtrieb is FREE.

New!!! Free BUS SHUTTLE between Niederau and Auffach - 2 x in the morning and 2 x in the afternoon

Almererfeste usually last until late at night, because there is a lot to tell - about the long alpine summer in the Wildschönau.

Note: The Niederau Almabtrieb will take place on 17.09.2022. A small Almerer festival also takes place in Oberau on 24.09

The beard says a lotBy the way: almost all "Almerer" still grow a beard during the summer months. The beard only comes off when the alpine pasture workers have been paid by the respective farmers - an old tradition.

There are several colourful autumn festivals in the Wildschönau. One of the highlights is the Wildschönau Krautinger Week. The programme includes farm-to-farm hikes, a music programme, a craft market, a "Krautinger-Raos" and the big museum church day on 2 October
