Vier Elektrobusse nehmen ab 2023 Betrieb in der Gletscherregion Tux-Finkenberg auf

Updated 18.11.2022

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary, a new era begins for the Tux sports buses - from January 2023, four emission-free MAN E-buses will be used for passenger transport all year round at the foot of the Hintertux Glacier in the Tux-Finkenberg region.

50 years of sustainable mobility in Tux-FinkenbergWhenthe four E-buses come into operation in January 2023, it will be exactly 50 years since the first "free sports bus" went into operation in the Tux-Finkenberg glacier region. At the time, this offer was something completely new for guests and locals. Since 1973, the buses in use have covered 8,000,000 kilometres and transported about 65,000,000 people. The emissions saved by the use of the buses and the resulting reduction in individual transport are enormous.

Now a further step is being taken towards zero emissions. From January 2023, four e-buses will be used in the winter months on the route between Vorderlanersbach and Hintertux - and in the summer months between Mayrhofen and Hintertux or Schlegeis reservoir. These will continue to take guests and locals to their destinations free of charge. The battery-powered vehicles are supplied with environmentally friendly, renewable energy and thus replace around 122,500 litres of environmentally harmful fossil diesel fuel per year for 281,234 total kilometres. The expected CO2 saving is 324,190 kg CO2 per year. In this context, the entire electrical charging infrastructure, including all the necessary technical and safety-relevant equipment, is being completely rebuilt. But not only is the environment protected, the e-buses also offer a more spacious and, above all, quieter environment for passengers. "In the Tux-Finkenberg region, people are proud of the fact that mobility can be carried out in an even more sustainable and environmentally friendly way in the future. As part of the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park, this is also a particular concern of the region," says Markus Tipotsch, chairman of the Tux-Finkenberg Tourism Association.

Cooperation for more environmental friendlinessAndreasKröll, Managing Director of Christophorus Reiseveranstaltungs GmbH, emphasises: "The close and long-standing cooperation between the TVB Tux-Finkenberg, the Zillertaler Gletscherbahnen and Christophorus Busbetriebs GmbH makes innovative projects like this one possible. As a local company, the sensitive natural environment is naturally particularly close to our hearts. That is why we have been implementing projects for years that contribute to the sustainable development of mobility."

Technical details of the e-busesLars Heydecker, Head of Sales at MAN Truck & Bus, knows all about the technical background and the major challenge that previous pilot projects failed to overcome: "The challenges posed by the topography in the region are now part of the solution. Thanks to extremely efficient recuperation, i.e. by recovering energy when driving downhill, the average daily distance of 220 kilometres can be covered without charging in the meantime." Heinrich Degenhart, training manager at MAN ProfiDrive, adds: "Whereas with diesel engines, in order to save fuel, braking is avoided as far as possible by driving fluidly and with foresight, the reverse rule now applies: deceleration with the accelerator pedal must be in order to recover energy through recuperation."

"The use of electric buses in the Tux-Finkenberg region is an important step in the project of the century of emission-free upper side valleys and brings this goal within reach," says Willi Seifert, Managing Director of the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park. In the end, this would mean a CO2-neutral visit to these unique excursion destinations in the Zillertal.
