Sölden startet Tirols längste Mountaincart-Strecke

Updated 04.07.2022

Since the beginning of July, a new summer offer in the Ötztal has guaranteed fast-paced fun for all generations. The 7.3-kilometre route leads from the middle station of the Gaislachkoglbahn to the valley. Clever synergy effect: the route of the toboggan run uses existing infrastructure.

Mountain carts? To non-insiders, these vehicles with their low centre of gravity and one-metre width can be described as a kind of off-road go-kart. To unleash their true action potential, however, the mountain carts need a suitable terrain. In Sölden, the existing winter toboggan run was slightly adapted for this purpose and made suitable for summer use. This means that locals and guests can now enjoy Tyrol's longest mountain cart track. This runs over 7.3 kilometres from the middle station of the Gaislachkoglbahn (2,170 m) to the valley (1,366 m). The gondola lift takes recreational athletes comfortably to the start in just a few minutes. There, the vehicles can be rented along with protective equipment and appropriate safety instruction. The leisure activity is available for people of (almost) all ages, because the mountain carts are easy to master: from children from 10 years and 130 cm up to the grandparent generation (young co-pilots from 6 years ride along on the lap). The low centre of gravity provides safety. Two brakes allow quick stops or, for the more experienced, pure drifting fun in the curves. The project was realised by three local sports retailers in cooperation with Bergbahnen Sölden and Ötztal Tourismus.

Ideal route"Our track in Sölden has the best conditions for mountain carts. It is relatively flat, but has enough steepness to make it fun to ride. The width of the track of two and a half metres also allows overtaking manoeuvres or gives the opportunity to let other mountain cart fans pass," explains David Glanzer, chairman of the Sölden local committee. He is the initiator of the project, which launches a new summer offer and at the same time integrates existing infrastructure. For the summer use of the toboggan run, only minor adaptation work was required. In addition to the application of gravel, the track received additional impact mats. During operation, the Sölden Mountain Rescue Service takes over track safety and, if necessary, the rescue chain. This model is already proving its worth in the BIKE REPUBLIC SÖLDEN. A total fleet of 90 mountain carts is available in Sölden. Three local sports dealers take care of the rental and the associated logistics. The Gaislachkoglbahn cable car of Bergbahnen Sölden takes guests comfortably to the starting point at the middle station
