83 modern cable cars, 270 kilometres of pistes and over 80 huts: SkiWelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental is one of the largest ski areas in the world - and one of the most ecological. For the past 20 years it has been powered 100 percent by green electricity from renewable hydropower.
The mountain railways of six resorts between Brixental and Wildem Kaiser have been working together since 1977. Ongoing investments totalling over half a billion euros have created one of the largest and most ecological ski areas in the world to date. According to the motto "insanely big and insanely close", SkiWelt combines 83 modern lifts, 270 kilometres of pistes and 80 huts just an hour's drive from Munich.
From the very beginning, SkiWelt has invested in groundbreaking projects. As early as 1970, Europe's longest fun icular was built in SkiWelt Ellmau, and in 1988, Europe's first 8-seater chairlift was built in SkiWelt Söll. Since 2002, 100 percent of the electricity for all the lifts has come from hydroelectric power. In recent years, solar energy has also been increasingly used: in the "Sonnenlift" in SkiWelt Brixen, one of the first completely solar-powered lifts in the world, since 2008.
For snowmaking, the SkiWelt has 16 natural storage ponds that are perfectly integrated into the flora and fauna and are mainly filled by snowmelt, precipitation and springs. By the way, technically produced snow in Tyrol is only pure drinking water in another form. As the snow melts in spring, the water is thus returned to nature in a natural way and serves to irrigate the diverse fauna. 65 piste machines prepare the pistes in the SkiWelt every night - equipped with a GPS system for the last five years. This allows the snow depth to be measured and distributed precisely where it is actually needed. As a result, SkiWelt has been saving around 25 percent in water resources, electricity and costs since 2017. skiwelt.at/oekologie
Skiing with the power of the winter sun: photovoltaic modules can be found on more and more buildings and lifts (e.g. Jochlift and Zinsbergbahn - SkiWelt Brixen, Brandstadl - SkiWelt Scheffau). The first systems were installed here as early as 2008. Since spring 2022, Bergbahnen Ellmau has also been relying on solar energy with the full expansion of the valley and mountain stations. With 350 kilowatts peak, the systems can save up to 50 percent of external electricity and energy costs in the future. The SkiWelt also uses renewable energy to heat its operational buildings. In addition to pellets and biomass, waste heat from lifts, snow guns and transformers is increasingly being used with the help of heat pumps (Hexenwasserbahn - SkiWelt Söll, SkiWeltBahn - SkiWelt Brixen im Thale and Alpenrosenbahn - SkiWelt Westendorf). The Choralpe mountain restaurant has been heated from the return heat of the SkiWelt lift and Choralmbahn since 2008.
in 2017, the SkiWelt received the "World Snow Award" from the British daily newspaper "The Telegraph" in London. It is also pleasing to note that for years the ski area has been the winner of the "Most environmentally friendly ski operation" test on skiresort.at. This is incentive enough to further reduce the footprint. More about the projects, waste separation systems and e-charging stations at skiwelt.at/oekologie.
Insanely sustainable: by train and bus to SkiWelt
From the very beginning, SkiWelt was one of the pioneers in the area of train and bus travel. The location of the Hopfgarten cable car was deliberately chosen over 75 years ago to be right next to the railway station. Today, SkiWelt Hopfgarten offers a railway station that is also called "Skilift" and is only about 100m away from the Hopfgarten cable car. More than 20 years ago, SkiWelt initiated a ski train from Munich or even Denmark to the Brixental. Today it is more topical than ever and so it is hardly surprising that SkiWelt was a pilot partner for the ÖBB Nightjet as well as the ÖBB Winter Combiticket from the very beginning. This means that in the winter of 2022/23, guests will be able to travel overnight from Hamburg, Düsseldorf and Amsterdam to all the resorts in the SkiWelt and start their day rested on the SkiWelt slopes first thing in the morning. All resorts? Yes, because 4 Seasons Travel picks up the guests directly at the train station in Kufstein or Wörgl and brings them to the booked accommodation in all SkiWelt resorts. In addition, you can travel to the SkiWelt in Austria with the Winter Sports Combiticket from all railway stations in Austria - the cooperation with ÖBB Rail Tours makes it possible! New in winter 2022/23: a night connection from Sweden and Denmark and the continuation of the night train from London. There will also be a daily ski bus shuttle service from Munich to the SkiWelt. Further projects are in the pipeline and will be published on an ongoing basis.
