The winter season in the Tannheimer Tal starts at the beginning of December. Europe's most beautiful high valley will then also entice you with its fantastically beautiful landscape consisting of rugged peaks, wide mountain slopes, endless snowfields and crystal-clear lakes. Ideal for enjoying a gentle winter holiday. Be it winter hiking, on the slopes and cross-country ski trails or a multitude of other winter activities.
Thickly snow-covered endless fields, traditionally quaint houses with snow-covered roofs and frozen lakes surrounded by the white slopes of towering mountains. Year after year, the Tyrolean Tannheim Valley just over the German-Austrian border is transformed into a snow-white mountain paradise. At an altitude of 1,100 metres, you can really savour the winter here with many activities - whether relaxed alone, romantically as a couple or with the whole family.
Six skiing areas for a varied skiing holiday
Six small but fine skiing areas in the Tannheimer Tal ensure fun on the slopes for young and old. With relaxed panoramic slopes, five skiing children's areas and also fast-paced downhill runs such as the FIS race course, there is something here for everyone. If you want more, you can also explore the slopes in other Tyrolean ski areas or in the neighbouring Allgäu region with the Verbund ski passes. In the Jungholz ski area, the coming season is expected to start on the last weekend of November with weekend skiing and on 3 December with continuous skiing, depending on snow conditions. In the course of December, the other ski areas in Zöblen will also open on 11 December, Tannheim and Grän on 16 December, Schattwald on 22 December and Nesselwängle depending on the weather.
Step by step through the winter wonderland of the Tyrolean high valley
On 81 kilometres of cleared winter hiking trails distributed over 16 hiking routes, the view of the snow-covered Tyrolean and Allgäu mountains all around can be enjoyed for a particularly long time. The region offers both relaxed walks in the valley (e.g. to the picturesque Vilsalpsee) and panoramic routes on the mountain. Those who want to explore the untouched nature off the daily groomed hiking trails can do so on guided snowshoe hiking tours that start regularly from various locations.
Winter mountain railways included
From 09 to 26 January and from 13 to 16 March, all hosts in the Tannheimer Tal have a special offer for overnight guests in cooperation with the local mountain railways: With a minimum stay of three nights, they can enjoy free use of the local ski lifts from Monday to Thursday. It doesn't matter whether you prefer to ski or snowboard or use the lifts for hiking excursions - there is a suitable lift for every activity.
Excellent cross-country skiing
If you are interested in cross-country skiing, you are guaranteed to be in good hands in the Tannheimer Tal. Here, 140 kilometres of cross-country trails are spread over a versatile network of routes for classic cross-country skiing or skating. Everything is on offer, from enjoyment routes without gradients, to panoramic circular trails, to high-level competition routes. The very good quality of the extensive, snow-sure cross-country skiing offer is also attested to by the Tyrolean cross-country skiing seal of quality, which has been awarded to the region for years. Furthermore, the region offers courses for beginners as well as for ambitious advanced skiers. A special cross-country skiing highlight is the SKI TRAIL Tannheimer Tal-Bad Hindelang from 27 to 29 January 2023. The event consists of several amateur competitions in the "classic" and "skating" technique and guarantees the best cross-country skiing and atmosphere. Registration opens in November.
Other activities
There are also many other activities to whet your appetite for winter in the Hochtal. For example, you can do your rounds on the new ice-skating rink in Tannheim when the temperatures are cold, or take advantage of eight cosy toboggan runs for young and old. Romantic horse-drawn carriage rides are also on offer and those who prefer both a romantic and adventurous experience should not miss out on a panoramic balloon ride. Speaking of balloons: from 8 to 28 January, the "International Balloon Festival Tannheimer Tal" will conjure up numerous floating giants of the air in the sky. You are guaranteed to get a launching spot here, and if you prefer to keep both feet on the ground, you should not miss the traditional balloon glow on three Tuesday evenings. After dark, the burners of the hot-air balloons anchored to the ground are lit so that the glowing flying giants impressively glitter in the surrounding winter landscape.
