This is the sixth time that the City of Innsbruck has awarded the "Prize of the Provincial Capital of Innsbruck for Research and Innovation at MCI". This year, the MCI impressed with three award-winning projects, including a team submission for the first time. The award, which is endowed with 5,000 euros, was presented at a ceremony in the historic Bürgersaal by City Councillor Christine Oppitz-Plörer and MCI Rector Andreas Altmann. This year, for the first time, a representative of the Province of Tyrol, Cornelia Hagele, took part in the festivities.
Award winners
Dr. Jan Back, MSc
In the context of his dissertation "Rethinking Water Treatment: Membranes, Adsorption, Advanced Oxidation and Natural Attenuation", Jan Back of the MCI Department of Environmental, Process and Energy Engineering is developing advanced purification processes for water treatment and sewage plants. He is researching various combinations of membrane technology, adsorption, advanced oxidation and natural attenuation.
Ass.-Prof. Dr. Claudia Zoller and Lukas Kerschbaumer, BA, MA
Claudia Zoller and Lukas Kerschbaumer of the Research Center for Innovation in Social & Health Care at MCI are supporting the company MOVEEFFECT in the development of an app to promote workplace health management. The aim of the app is to provide individual support for users to achieve their self-imposed goals in the areas of fitness, nutrition and mental health.
Manuel Berger, BSc, MSc, PhD
In his dissertation "Simulation-based prediction of resection zones in rhinology", Manuel Berger of the MCI Department Medical & Health Technologies is researching a computer-based simulation to better plan operations in the nasal cavity and increase the success for operations to improve nasal breathing
Science Provincial Councillor Cornelia Hagele warmly congratulates the award winners: "We are proud of our research institutions and companies, whose reputation is in turn based on the dedication of the researchers who work there. With the award of the City of Innsbruck, outstanding young scientists are brought before the curtain today. They contribute significantly to making our country a European leader, especially in the field of life sciences."

The Prize of the Provincial Capital of Innsbruck for Research and Innovation at the Entrepreneurial University® was awarded for the first time in 2017. The MCI conducts the annual call for entries and proposes the award winners. The City Senate decides on the awarding of the prize to the persons nominated by the MCI.
