Picture-book weather and an exuberant atmosphere made the 16th Pitztal Glacier Marathon a great start to the running season.
Around 600 participants enjoyed perfect weather conditions and a thoroughly successful running event at the 16th Pitztal Glacier Marathon. Sports fans from a total of 26 nations took to the starting line for the marathon, half marathon, relay marathon, the 11.2 kilometre Run & Fun and this year for the first time the new 5.5 kilometre run.
"A successful premiere for the new course, the new finish area and the new discipline," sums up Gerhard Gstettner, Managing Director of the TVB Pitztal. "It was a cool start, with everyone reaching the finish line in good health. Even the last marathon runner, Antonio Niego (1954, ITA), made it across the finish line and was welcomed by numerous cheering onlookers."
The overall victory in the women's race went to Poland this year. Anna Kawalec (3:23:48.5) held her own against Alexandra Raich-Mader (AUT, 3:29:18.0). Third went to Tanja Volm from Germany (3:35:35.4). In the men's race Volker Bender (GER, 2:46:12,0) won ahead of Christian Kurrat (GER, 2:50:02,8) and Grzegorz Galezia (POL, 2:51:14,5).
More than 130 children competed on Saturday in Pitz Park in Pitzi's children's run, which required both speed and skill. All children received a medal after the obstacle course and then rewarded themselves with a jump into the water.
Last year, the Pitztal Glacier Marathon was still a basic green event, but this year it went to the next level. "We can organise running events," laughs Michael Metzler, sustainability manager in Pitztal. "This year we have proven for the second time that we can also do it in terms of sustainability. "The major milestones from last year (waste separation system, reusable products, meat-free meals, ...) have been improved and many new steps have been taken to work towards the Green Event star.
