Railway romantics get their money's worth in the Zillertal in summer. The Zillertalbahn steam train starts the new season right on time on the first weekend in May.
The steam trains of the Zillertalbahn have been running for almost 120 years and still transport guests from Jenbach to Mayrhofen and back every day in summer. This promises not only a fantastic view of the impressive landscape in the valley, including the numerous surrounding three-thousand metre peaks, but also a pinch of nostalgia. Whether you savour the full route from Jenbach to Mayrhofen, or hop on at one of the stations in the Zillertal villages and indulge in culinary delights in the nostalgic dining car or enjoy the panorama in the open-air carriage, a train journey on the Zillertalbahn steam train is an unforgettable experience for young and old alike.
The 'old lady' of the Zillertal Railway is powered by coal, which is hard manual labour. Between May and October, the train drivers are on site every day at 6 a.m. to preheat the steam locomotive, and at 10 a.m. it is then brought from the boiler house to the station track. Railway fans are often already waiting there to catch their first glimpse of the nostalgic locomotive. The train then travels down the valley to Mayrhofen, a train journey that is a bit like travelling back in time.
