Climate-friendly "In the Nightjet to the snow"

Updated 16.11.2022

A climate-friendly journey is also becoming increasingly important for many guests on winter holidays. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), the Association of Austrian Cable Cars (Fachverband der österreichischen Seilbahnen) and the Tirol Tourist Board (Tirol Werbung) are further expanding the "Nightjet to the snow" offer for the coming winter season 2022/23. With a relaxed journey to and from the ski resorts on ÖBB's night trains, the holiday can already begin at home.

Together with important Tyrolean regions, it was already possible last winter to book the ski pass together with the arrival and departure on ÖBB's Nightjets as well as the transfer from the station to the accommodation. In the coming winter, another new destination will be added: Seefeld region - Tyrol's high plateau.

The packages including rail travel, the 3-, 4-, 5- or 6-day ski pass as well as the transfer can now be booked for the Tyrolean ski resorts of St. Anton am Arlberg, Stubai Glacier, Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental as well as KitzSki - ski resort Kitzbühel, Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau, Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena and for the Zillertal. Bookings can now be made directly with ÖBB Rail Tours at kombitickets@railtours.oebb.atbzw. at kombitickets.railtours.at

With its diverse initiatives, the Austrian cable car industry is well on its way towards climate neutrality and has saved 20 per cent of energy in the past ten years alone. Sustainability in arrival and departure is one of the few areas where there is still further potential to be activated in terms of CO2 reduction. "All the more important are practical offers such as 'In the Nightjet to the Snow', which perfectly combine comfort, climate friendliness and affordability," explains Franz Hörl, chairman of the Association of Cable Cars in the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber.

Since 2012, the Tirol Tourist Board has been promoting travel by rail and strengthening public transport as part of the "Tirol auf Schiene" initiative. "On the one hand, we want to relieve our roads and at the same time promote environmentally friendly mobility," emphasises Karin Seiler, Managing Director of the Tirol Tourist Board. "Successful projects such as 'In the Nightjet to the Snow' make a significant contribution to our efforts to bring travel to the railways and take into account the entire mobility chain.

"We are happy and proud to make an important contribution to an environmentally friendly holiday with our offer of travelling to the skiing holiday by Nightjet," says Eva Buzzi, Managing Director of ÖBB Rail Tours. "The strong increase in demand from Germany and the Netherlands confirms that we are absolutely right with this product."

Winter sports combination tickets are also becoming increasingly popular

For some time now, ÖBB has been offering the joint booking of trips on day trains and ski passes as part of the "Winter Sports Combitickets". This popular offer is also being taken up by more and more winter sports destinations and thus helps to further reduce individual transport in the tourist regions. From the coming season, the winter sports combi-tickets will also be offered for the ski regions Ski Juwel Alpbachtal-Wildschönau, Mühlbach am Hochkönig and 3 Zinnen Dolomiten. The ski resorts of Stuhleck, Schladming, St. Anton am Arlberg, Lech Zürs, Skiwelt Wilder Kaiser - Brixental, Zillertal, Kitzbühel, Lienz-Osttirol, Gastein, Snow Space Salzburg and Zell am See-Kaprun are once again included. Tickets can already be purchased through ÖBB's sales channels (ÖBB Ticketshop, ÖBB App, ÖBB Ticket Counter, Customer Service Tel. +43-05-1717-3).
