If you look it up in the dictionary, a hero is someone who faces a difficult task with intrepidity and courage or performs an unusual deed worthy of admiration. The opportunity to take on such tasks and deeds is plentiful in Tyrol. Here, holidaymakers can become Hero of the Day every day. Whether on speedy rides, at airy heights or in icy temperatures, you can put your courage to the test in many places. On the bobsleigh and toboggan run in Innsbruck Igls, when climbing an icefall or on an icy kayak tour. Or simply by sitting down.
Bobsleigh rafting, skeleton or four-man wok: On the trail of an Olympic champion
Olympic bobsleigh champion Francesco Friedrich has already won the World Cup 16 times in the Innsbruck Igls ice canal. In addition, he was World and European Champion here. He currently holds the track record in both the two-man and four-man bobsleighs. Bold holidaymakers are unlikely to succeed in breaking these best times. But they can still dare to take a speedy ride through the Olympic ice canal of the 1964 Winter Games - at up to 120 km/h through the 1,270-metre-long tube with its 14 bends. Either in a racing bobsleigh, driven by world-class pilots, or in bobsleigh rafting. Also bookable: A daredevil skeleton ride or a place in a four-man wok - known from TV Total.
Winter kayak: ideal for hot-blooded people
This trip is not for warm-blooded people: because winter kayaking takes you through icy water with single-digit temperatures, the paddle stroke must not be too leisurely, otherwise it quickly becomes shivery. But with the right equipment, the cold shock becomes an unforgettable nature experience: for it's through white winter landscapes, interspersed with glittering ice crystals. Suitable rivers for this daring undertaking include the Lech, the Imster Gorge and the Tiroler Ache. Bookable at the Kitzalp Canoe School.
Ice Climbing: The Fear of Pleasure
If you've always wanted to take on a predator, ice climbing is the right choice. Yet the icefall near Hochfinstermünz, named after the movie monster, is not the biggest opponent waiting for brave climbers in Tyrol. A real hero's test, for example, is the "Fear of Lust" route in Kaunertal, which is considered a great challenge. For real experts is the "Liftspur" in Längenfeld in the Ötztal. A very difficult climb. This is because the steep icefall with individual pillars is vertical throughout and offers no rest positions. The climbing time is two hours. The fact is: Tyrol is a climbing paradise - both for professionals and beginners.
Ski tours: crossing the Wipptal valley
The deep snow-covered mountains of Tyrol are the perfect territory for ski tours. Whether for beginners or experts, there are all kinds of difficulty levels. A special highlight is the Wipptaler Skidurchquerung: the 6-day area traverse leads from the Stubaital to the Brennerbad in South Tyrol and, with daily stages between 800 and 1,200 metres in altitude, is suitable for beginners and connoisseurs alike.
Alpine Coaster: a hero's ride for the little ones
In the Drachental Wildschönau, even the youngest can become little superheroes. There are no fire-breathing dragons to conquer, but a wild ride on the Alpine Coaster requires a lot of courage. 1.the 355-metre descent into the valley is spectacular, over curves, bridges and three up to 25-metre-high roundabouts. Not to mention the breathtaking view. Children aged 8 and over may ride alone, children aged three to seven only if accompanied. The kite park is open all year round.
Trembling beam: sitting also requires courage
A special test of courage is the trembling beam. Even though you only have to sit here. For the inconspicuous beam has a very, very airy location. It is the starting beam from which the ski jumpers hurl themselves down the Bergisel ski jump in Innsbruck. They go down the 98-metre-long run-up track at 90 km/h, and the height difference between the run-up and the run-out is a proud 128 metres. Sitting here on the trembling beam alone takes courage. To reassure you: You are strapped in so that no one slips. This special experience can only be booked as a group event.
