The music is on! Almabtrieb in the Zillertal

Updated 03.08.2022

"Tufting up" is the order of the day when the cows Susi, Bella, Sissi head towards the valley with their magnificent headdresses of fir green, silver thistles and ribbons during the Almabtrieb. From mid-September, the ringing of the cowbells fills the First Holiday Region in the Zillertal several times: Fügen at the Kohlerhof (17 September), Fügen in the village (24 September) and Hart in the Zillertal (1 October).

Autumn tradition in the First Holiday Region in the Zillertal

In September, not only the leaves shine in colourful splendour, but also the cows. It's time to leave the alpine meadows "tufted up" and hike down into the valley to spend the winter on the farm. With a large bell around her neck, the lead cow leads the herd safely down from the mountain. A spectacle that is watched year after year with enthusiasm by spectators from all over the world, who await the decorated animals with music, traditional dancing and Zillertal doughnuts. In the First Holiday Region in the Zillertal, several different Almabtriebe thrill young and old alike. Traditionally, the Almabtrieb celebrates the safe return of the animals and dairymen, as well as saying goodbye to summer. "The Almabtrieb plays a very special role for us in the Zillertal and is an absolute highlight for visitors, holidaymakers and guests. It once again conveys our attachment to customs and tradition," explains Manfred Pfister, Managing Director of the Tourism Association of the First Holiday Region in the Zillertal.

At the Hotel Kohlerhof in Fügen, musical entertainment and a colourful children's programme await visitors on 17 September from 10.00 am. On 24 September there will be a big event: at the "Almabtrieb" in the village of Fügen, the animals will parade through the centre in several groups from 11.30 am. A varied supporting programme with market stalls, music groups, a varied children's programme, plenty of Melchermuas and doughnuts make this event one of the biggest Almabtriebe in the Zillertal. Hart im Zillertal does it a little differently - on 1 October the herd marches down into the valley, but does not go directly to the local stables, but stays on site at the Moarhof.
