Die Mountainbike-, E-MTB- und Rennrad-Highlights 2022 in Osttirol

Updated on 09.06.2022

Why is East Tyrol the hotspot for cyclists of all abilities? In the nine mountain groups of East Tyrol, everyone is guaranteed to find their dream tour - whether on single trails, pleasant gravel roads, lonely tarmac, river cycle paths or combined e-bike & hike tours. And thanks to the prime location on the sunny side of the Alps, the season starts at the beginning of May and lasts well into Golden October. East Tyrol is not only the most environmentally friendly region in Europe, but also the place to be for all bike enthusiasts.

Some regions simply have sport in their blood. Just like East Tyrol when it comes to mountain biking. Alban Lakata, Felix Gall and Gabriel Wibmer are just some of the world-renowned mountain bikers who come from East Tyrol. The special topography is certainly one of the secrets as to why there are so many top mountain bikers here. If you are looking for tours with 2000 metres of altitude difference, you are guaranteed to find it in East Tyrol! Want an example? Starting from Lienz, you can head into the Debanttal valley, up to the Dolomitenhütte and on into the Lienz Dolomites, over the tracks of the Dolomite men to the Hochsteinhütte or to Hochstadel and Ederplan as well as via Thurn past the Schleinitz to the Zettersfeld and back down to Lienz. But don't worry: in East Tyrol it's not just marathon world champions Alban Lakata & Co. who are happy, but also normal people!

PARKADE: unlimited biking fun between the Grossglockner, Dolomites & Adriatic Sea

137 kilometres as the crow flies separate Lienz from the Adriatic Sea. What do the neighbours East Tyrol, Friuli and Veneto have in common? Their passion for mountain biking! So they developed a cross-border multi-day tour called PARKADE. Here you can experience the most beautiful landscapes between the Grossglockner, the Dolomites and the Adriatic Sea from the saddle. Three different routes are best travelled by e-mountainbike from East Tyrol's capital Lienz to the Adriatic Sea, experiencing unique mountain moments in the high valleys of East Tyrol, the fascination of crossing the border and the gentle plains of Friuli and Veneto on the way south. The PARKADE APP is the perfect touring companion on the way south. The free little helper for your mobile phone provides lots of tour suggestions and tips. This makes the cross-border week-long tour with its three variants a cultural and culinary treat between the alpine charm of East Tyrol and the Mediterranean flair of Friuli and Veneto.

The best infrastructure: cycle paths for connoisseurs, bike parks for the wild ones

With its unique high valleys, rustic alpine huts with the finest cuisine, East Tyrol is the ideal biking region on the sunny side of the Alps. Always present: the 266 three-thousand metre peaks. Mountain bikers can look forward to 120 marked routes in East Tyrol. Leisure cyclists and families, on the other hand, cruise through East Tyrol on a 1,000 kilometre network of the best cycle paths. The Drau Cycle Path leads from South Tyrol to Carinthia over a distance of 63 kilometres through East Tyrol. The Iseltal Cycle Path runs for almost 30 kilometres from Lienz to Matrei: the Isel, probably the most impressive unobstructed glacial river in the Alps, is your cycling companion.

Downhill and enduro freaks are drawn to the bike parks in Lienz and Kals am Großglockner. The Lienz bike park on the local Hochstein mountain with its four trails and a pump track is located right next to the Dolomite town of Lienz. Downhillers rock three trails in the Bikepark Großglockner Resort Kals. Always in view: the Großglockner, Austria's high point.

A must for road cyclists: "Tour of the Dolomites" and "SuperGiroDolomiti" on 12 June 2022

The Tour of the Dolomites Cycling Tour, Austria's oldest cycling marathon, crosses the Gailberg Pass and Kartitscher Sattel on a 112-kilometre route suitable for everyone. By the time you come full circle in the picturesque old town of Lienz, you will have climbed almost 1900 metres in altitude - and will have burned unforgettable impressions into your long-term memory. The Dolomites Cycle Tour takes place this year on Sunday 12 June.

If you really want to let your inner bastard out, take part in what is probably the most challenging cycling marathon in the Alps - the SuperGiroDolomiti. This also takes place on 12 June. The bare figures alone will make your calves twitch: 228 kilometres. 5450 metres in altitude. Six climbs. One destination: Lienz. The hardest nut to crack is the 1200 metre ascent to Monte Zoncolan. The 1731 metre high mountain has already seen plenty of blood, sweat and tears in the Giro d'Italia. The non-professionals experience a real Giro feeling not only on the "executioner" of the SuperGiroDolomiti, but also in the many villages that you pass through on the 228 kilometres.
