The balloons are loose again

Updated on 26/08/2022

They're taking off again - the hot air balloons. The International Libro Balloon Cup will take place for the 33rd time in Kirchberg from 16 to 24 September. Over 25 teams will take to the skies during these days and transform the sky in the Kitzbühel Alps into a sea of balloons as part of their competition flights.

It is not an everyday spectacle when the balloon lying on the ground slowly fills with hot air, lifts lazily from the ground until it finally floats above the basket, slowly pulls it towards the sky and disappears as a small dot a few kilometres above the ground. This spectacle can be seen from 16 to 24 September as part of the International Libro Balloon Cup in Kirchberg. More than 25 teams from Austria, Germany, Great Britain and Switzerland will be competing this week. The wind navigates the balloonists as they manoeuvre over the mountains and through the valleys with the different air currents at different altitudes - landing point unknown. The aim is to let yourself drift, because the journey is the destination. If you want to take to the skies yourself, the International Libro Balloon Cup will give you the opportunity to do so again this year. The balloons will take off with guests every day at around 8 am and 5 pm.

When the sky lights up: the Night of the Balloons on 17 September

On Saturday, 17 September, the Balloon Cup starts at 8 a.m. with the opening flights of all participants. A special spectacle and crowd-puller is the "Night of the Balloons", which also takes place on Saturday, 17 September at 7 pm (alternative dates are 18 and 21 September). Once again, a colourful display of different shapes will enchant the night sky in Brixental Valley. On Sunday, 18 September, all little balloon fans will get their money's worth. The children's afternoon starts at 2 pm at the launch site in Kirchberg (Seefeldstube). On Tuesday, 20 September, the balloons will take off at 5.45 am for a sunrise flight and on Wednesday, 21 September, the balloon pilots will take off from the Brixnerwirtsfeld in Brixen. On Thursday, 22 September, the balloons will take off at 5 pm from the "Feichten" or "Alpenrosenbahn" launch site in Westendorf.
