Bob Sculpture is Ischgl's "Form in White" 2022

Updated 09.02.2022

The Ischgl jury's verdict on the 28th "Forms in White" snow sculpture competition is in: first place went to Ralf Rosa and Peter Fechtig from Germany with their "Speed" bobsleigh sculpture. From now on, guests in the Silvretta Arena can marvel at four spectacular winter sports visions up to ten metres high, created by four pairs of artists from Germany, Great Britain and Italy.

Art and winter sports go hand in hand again on Ischgl's slopes from now on. At the snow sculpture competition "Forms in White", which took place in Ischgl for the 28th time this year from 10 to 14 January, four international artist couples transformed Ischgl's slopes into an open-air gallery for winter sports visions in five days. There are four spectacular snow sculptures up to ten metres high to marvel at: "Speed", a speedy bobsleigh ride in the bobsleigh run, "Ice Skates" a pair of oversized ice skates, "Big Air" shows a snowboarder doing aerial acrobatics and the figure "Eddie the Eagle" portrays the English ski jumping idol on the ski jump. After careful consideration, the Ischgl jury chose the sculpture "Speed" by Ralf Rosa and Peter Fechtig from Germany as the winner. Guests can admire the icy winter sports landmarks on foot or on skis from all sides. A map with explanations and locations of the "shapes in white" is available free of charge on site.

Winter sports visions made icy

Four spectacular snow sculptures, four teams of artists from three countries and ultimately only one 1st place. For the Ischgl jury, the 28th "Forms in White" snow sculpture competition under the motto "Winter Sports" turned out to be an agony of choice this year: "Every year, the artists impress us anew with their creative interpretations of the motto and their masterful realisation. This year the four pairs of artists made our choice particularly difficult," says jury member Dietmar Walser, Managing Director of the Paznaun - Ischgl Tourist Board. The jury's verdict: 2022 Ralf Rosa and Peter Fechtig from Germany won gold for their bobsleigh run "Speed". Vladimiro Tessaro and Giovanni Fabiani from Italy came second with their "Ice Skates". Bronze went to Simon Rauter and Peter Waldboth from Italy with their "Big Air" snowboard. Fourth place went to England's Justin Scott and Martin Sharp with their interpretation of Eddie the Eagle.

"Shapes in White" - the idea behind the art project

What are we going to do with all that snow? Art - what else! That's how the idea for the snow sculpture project "Forms in White" was born in Ischgl 29 years ago. Since then, sculptors from all over the world have sent their designs to the jury of the Ischgl Snow Sculpture Competition every year - based on a previously announced, annually changing motto. The jury selects the best ideas and invites the artist couples to the Silvretta Arena to realise them. The snow artists then have five days to create their up to ten-metre-high masterpieces from snow in the 239-kilometre-long Silvretta Arena. Thanks to a location mostly above 2,000 metres above sea level and sites directly at and on the slopes, the sculptures remain "tangible" for winter sports enthusiasts for a long time. The event will take place again next year in January.
