Due to its outstanding quality and high relevance for employees, the submission by Lukas Kerschbaumer, Sascha Gell and Pia Reichmann of the Center for Social & Health Innovation at MCI | Die Unternehmerische Hochschule® prevailed among a total of 15 papers on the general topic "Social consequences of the Corona pandemic" and receives the Science Award of the Chamber of Labour of Upper Austria.
In the course of their survey, which was funded by the province of Tyrol and the Chamber of Labour Tyrol, they interviewed 179 people and examined the effects of the Corona pandemic on vulnerable groups of people in Tyrol. In addition, the researchers had a lively exchange with the Tyrolean Poverty Research Forum.
The results of the MCI team make it clear that the pandemic made precarious living situations and challenges in the fight against poverty more visible and more difficult. Although support services were available in many places, eligible persons were unable to access them due to bureaucratic hurdles, lack of knowledge about possible support services, lack of digital skills or because they were ashamed. Children, in particular, felt the effects of the pandemic strongly, as they lacked not only financial means for "home schooling" but also places of retreat due to cramped living conditions as well as social contacts. People with disabilities and their relatives also report experiencing social isolation and restrictions on their self-determination.
