Advent in Mayrhofen – traditionell, gemütlich & besinnlich

Updated on 26.10.2022

The Mayrhofner Advent opens its doors again on 26 November. Away from the hustle and bustle, at the idyllically situated Waldfestplatz in the Scheulingwald, visitors can expect a contemplative and cosy Advent with open fireplaces, romantic candlelight, quiet melodies and local music groups. Christmas decorated stalls with exquisite handicrafts, creative gift ideas and Zillertal delicacies invite you to stroll and browse. For the little ones, the Christkindlpostamt, Kröll's Advent Bakery and the petting zoo are once again popular fixed points to shorten the waiting time until Christmas Eve.

On Saturday, 26 November 2022 at 5.00 p.m. the Mayrhofner Advent opens its doors at the Waldfestplatz. After the solemn consecration of the wreath by Father Jürgen Gradwohl in the parish church of Mayrhofen, the first candle on the Advent wreath will be lit at the Waldfestplatz. The huge hand-tied wreath, with a diameter of 3.5 metres, illuminates the Waldfestplatz on the Advent weekends. The Men's Singing Society of Mayrhofen frames the evening with a wonderful potpourri of well-known songs that invite you to sing along.

Every year, visitors are amazed by the variety and creativity of handmade products and Christmas gift ideas at the local stalls. This year, too, you can look forward to a wide selection: Christmas tree decorations, handicrafts, felted and knitted goods, biscuits, home-baked bread and much more await you at the stalls. And the enticing aroma of mulled wine and freshly prepared Zillertal doughnuts quickly puts you in the Christmas spirit.

Looking over a blacksmith's shoulder at his work used to be commonplace. Today it is a rarity that fascinates. From 16 to 17 December 2022, the East Tyrolean couple Kollreider from Anras will be guests at the Mayrhofner Advent with their historic field smithy, demonstrating how to work with red-hot iron around an anvil.

Local choirs, wind ensembles and, of course, the popular "Anklöpfler", who revive the custom of "Klöpflsingen" at the Waldfestplatz, provide the musical framework. Artificial sound is deliberately dispensed with. Romantic candlelight and open fireplaces also create an atmospheric ambience.

To shorten the waiting time for the Christ Child, a visit to the Waldfestplatz offers a special change for the little ones: At Kröll's Advent Bakery, kids can let off steam creatively while decorating the "Mayrhofner Advent Angel". Writing a personal wish letter with an angel makes children's dreams come true. And the petting zoo with sheep will make you forget all impatience for Christmas Eve.

Other special highlights of Mayrhofner Advent are the traditional St. Nicholas procession on Sunday, 4 December and the heavenly Christ Child procession on Sunday, 17 December, both at 6 pm.

The popular photo point in the entrance area of the Waldfestplatz invites you to capture your visit in pictures and send digital greetings to the world with #mayrhofneradvent #lovemayrhofen.
